An off the shoulder dress is always preferable over a dress with sleeves, because it immediately draws the attention to the shoulders and bust line.

Petite sized girls might also do well by showing off their legs.  They might be shorter than the average leg, but that doesn’t mean that they’re not shapely and beautiful.  Whether a prom dress is fitted with a tight or flared skirt, it should be short enough to show a good portion of the legs.

Another detail that will draw the attention away from a petite sized body is sequins.  A striking bodice that is eye catching will help to make a petite sized girl appear taller.  If sequins are not appealing, the neckline of the dress can be decorated with a necklace or a broach.

Styles to avoid should be tulip styled skirts.  The bulkiness of this type of skirt, combined with the lack of flow, will do nothing for a petite sized figure.  If anything, it will draw attention to the lower part of her body, which is not recommended.  Flowing skirts are always preferable.

If possible, skirts cut at the waist should be avoided too.  Petite sized girls do better with one piece dresses, or dresses cut under the bust.  The flow of the dress will suit her better and make her look taller.

To complete the outfit, high heeled shoes should be worn.  If high heels are not an option, pointy toe shoes should be selected.  Pointed toe shoes are always preferably for a petite sized girl verses shoes with round toes.  The pointed toes give her elegance and style and make her legs look longer.
